The Imagination of Glenn Gould
[Presentation slides (as pdf file) attached below.]
Glenn Gould was a key figure in classical music after the war. His version of Bach's Goldberg Variations broke new ground. With all of his quirks and idiosyncrasies, he opened our eyes to a lean, architectural vision of Bach, and of every other composer whose music he interpreted. And he was born and raised just a few miles from the Ryerson campus in The Beach. He was special on so many fronts. This course will examine his varied contributions in the interpretation of music and in the presentation of distinctly Canadian material on the CBC. We'll listen, watch and discuss.
